Vote on Build Back Better Act Delayed

Senator Schumer says more time is needed.

The Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, said Friday that President Biden’s massive social spending and climate legislation will not pass this year. Moderate Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia is a key holdout. He is concerned about passing the $1.75 trillion package amid rising inflation. Also, reticent to pass the bill is Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.

In a statement made on the Senate floor, Senator Schumer said, “The president requested more time to continue his negotiations, and so we will keep working with him, hand in hand, to bring this bill over the finish line and deliver on these much-needed provisions.” He did not mention any timeline for when the 2,000-page plus bill might come up for a vote.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the bill would increase the deficit by $3 trillion over the next ten years.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said he thinks the president’s massive Build back Better plan is “dead forever.”

Senator Schumer said he has turned his attention to passing a voting rights bill now that Build Back Better has stalled.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Majority Leader Schumer as he considers reconsidering the Build Back Better Act in the new year.
  • For members of the Senate to hear from and be attentive to their constituents during the holiday recess.
  • For members of the Senate as they undertake debating and voting on the voting rights legislation.
